How To Get Your High Schooler Excited About Learning History

Posted on: 16 May 2018

If your high school student seems less than excited about learning about history, you could be wondering if there is anything that you can do about it. Of course, many high schoolers seem to think that learning history will be boring, but this does not have to be the case at all. These are a few tips that can help you get your son or daughter a little more excited about and interested in this important school subject. You can create a high school homeschool history environment hybrid!

Appeal to Your Child's Interests

For one thing, you should consider the things that your teen is interested in, and look for ways to tie history lessons to these interests. For example, if your child is really interested in clothing and fashion, you can put a focus on teaching him or her about the different types of clothing that were popular over the years. Then, you can talk about what your teen would think about wearing and the pieces that he or she is really uninterested in.

If your teen is interested in horses, you can teach your teen about how horses have been used by humans throughout history, such as how people once used them as their primary transportation and how horses were used in war and more. Regardless of what your teen's interests might be, you can probably tie in a history lesson that is related to their interests in some way.

Turn on the TV

You might think that you will have to turn off the television in order to encourage your teen to learn about history. However, this is not the case at all. There are actually a ton of movies, TV shows, and documentaries out there that teach about history, whether they tell true stories or if they are simply based off of a certain historical period. Do your research to try to find interesting things for your teen to watch that are as historically accurate as possible; this can help you ensure that your teen is interested and entertained, but that he or she is getting accurate information at the same time.

Break Out the Books

There are tons of novels out there that are written with teenagers and young adults in mind but that provide a lot of historical information, as well. If your teen is an avid reader but doesn't seem too excited about picking up a history textbook, you may be able to find fiction or non-fiction books at the library or bookstore that can provide information.
